Sushruta (500 BC) lived in KASHI and got education by DHANVANTRI (Mythological GOD OF MEDICINE). SUSHRUTA SAMHITA is one of the most ancient medical treatises – (Book of Guidance) and one of the fundamental TEXT OF MEDICAL TRADITIONS in INDIA. along with CHARAK SAMHITA.
Surgery Known as SHALYA TANTRA. SHALYA means BROKEN ARROW, and TANTRA – MANEUVER is a process removing all factors responsible for producing PAIN or missary to the Body or MIND.
WARFARES were common and injuries sustained led to the development of Surgery, known in the part as “REFINED SCIENTIFIC SKILLS”.
Sushruta described Surgery under Eight Heads – CHEDYA (Excision), LEKHYA (Sacrification), Vedhya (Puncturing), ESYA (Exploration), AHRYA (Extraction), Vsrya (Evacuation) and Sivya (Suturing).
He described 60 types of UPKARMA for treatment of wounds, 120 Surgical instruments and 300 Surgical procedures and classification of Surgery in eight Heads.
Sushruta induced anesthesia using intoxicants such as Mine, hassbave (Cannibalism Indica). He treated many cases doing – Rhinoplasty, Lobuloplasty, Otoplasty. Rhinoplasty described by Sushruta in 600 B.C. is referred to as the INDIAN FLAP and he is Known as ORIGINATOR OF PLASTIC SURGERY.
He evolved many procedures of bony fractures, principle of traction, manipulation, opposition, stabilization, Swelling mars, and return of normal Colouring.
He was the first in HUMAN HISTORY who suggested the Students learn about human body and its organ by dissecting a dead body.
Sushruta SAMHITA was preserved for centuries in SANSKRIT. Translated in Arabic as “KITAB SHAH SHUN al-HINDI” and KITAB-1- Susurud. English translation was done by KAVIRAJ. KUNJA LAL BHISHAGRATNA in three Volumes in 1907, at Calcutta, published by HASSELER in LATIN, and MULLER in Germany in 19th century.
